Update : As of now Midjourney V4 supports Remix feature which renders this article pretty useless. You can read this to learn how to remaster MJ V4 images. For deatiled view on the Remix feature, you can read this article here. Stay tuned for more usefull articles as I am gonna keep sharing what I learn, with you all.
It’s been just a few hours that Midjourney has released its alpha test version of Version 4, namely Midjourney V 4 and already stirred up the generative art community pretty much. All of us are in awe with what this new version 4 can potentially be. As I want to express, it seems to have a mind of its own. It takes our prompts and creates something even we couldn’t imagine. Being in alpha stage, this Version 4 is quite limiting. For me the most important two being the absence of variable aspect ratios and ‘Remix’ mode. Some users have posted in various social media groups that you need to turn off the remix mode in order to generate in V 4 but that seems to be partially true. I’ll explain that later in the post.
The best way to use remix mode with Midjourney V 4 images is to replace the —v 4 with —test —creative. In that way you can use the remix features with the already generated images all while keeping most of the aesthetics that the new Version 4 provides.

How to Enable Midjourney Version 4
Generating images with Midjourney Version 4 is pretty straightforward. You just add —v 4 at the end of your prompt after /imagine to generate version 4 images. It’s as simple as that. Alternatively, if you don’t want to write —v4 at the end of each prompt individually, you can just type /settings and hit enter. The Midjourney settings menu pops up. By default the MJ version 3 is selected. You can just select MJ version 4 and it changes the default generation format into version 4.
Do You Need to Turn Off The Remix Mode in Midjourney Version 4?
There seems to be some misconception going on that you can’t generate images while keeping the remix mode on. You can definitely do so, but in actuality you just can’t Remix ‘version 4’ images. If you try to create variation of a certain image with the Remix mode on, it creates a remix instead of a Variation. As MJ version 4 doesn’t support Remix mode as of yet, it gives an error saying “Remixing to V4 is currently not supported“. So, if you want to create variation of a certain image in V 4, you have to turn the remix mode off. Otherwise it won’t work at all. You can turn it off simply by typing /prefer remix and hit enter in a server with midjourney bot or hit /settings and toggle the Remix option off to successfully create variations of V 4 images.
How To Remix in Midjourney Version 4
I found an awesome hack while playing with the MJ v4. Although you can not submit the Remix window with the v4 images but you get the Remix pop up when you hit the Variation button with the Remix mode toggled on. So, I just changed the —v 4 prompt to —test —creative and submitted the image and it worked. Yeah, it just worked. I was pretty surprised too. From there on you can remix the image as you would do with any remastered image. Here are some examples that I created using this method.

What Doesn’t Work and Why Only —test —creative?
Some would argue that why not just remove that —v 4 from the prompt instead of replacing it with —test —creative or —testp —creative. It’s because that changes the version from v4 to v3, v2 or v1 whatever your default is. As I have found out, remastered version is closest to v4 in terms of art style and generative preference. So, it works best keeping the image somewhat similar to its original generation. But if you change the version to anything else, then those versions being aesthetically different, things go sideways pretty fast. My default is set to v3 and here are just two examples which I think are already enough to convince you why you shouldn’t use anything other than the remastered version at least for portraits.
If you are wondering if you can change the aspect ratio by using Remix in this way, you can go through this article here to get some clarity. I’ll be doing more experiments with this mode and keep informing you all about what does or doesn’t work. Stay tuned…
